Subutex is a brand name for the medication buprenorphine, which is used primarily in the treatment of opioid dependence and addiction. Buprenorphine is classified as a partial opioid agonist, meaning it activates the same receptors in the brain as opioids but produces weaker effects compared to full opioid agonists like heroin or oxycodone. Subutex is unique in that it contains only buprenorphine as its active ingredient, whereas another commonly prescribed formulation called Suboxone contains both buprenorphine and naloxone. Naloxone is included in Suboxone to deter misuse by injection, as naloxone can precipitate withdrawal symptoms if injected by someone who is physically dependent on opioids.
