Ativan is prescribed for the short-term management of anxiety disorders, insomnia, and acute seizures. It is also used as a pre-anesthetic to induce sedation and reduce anxiety before certain medical procedures. Lorazepam, the active ingredient in Ativan, enhances the effects of a neurotransmitter called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). GABA has inhibitory effects on the central nervous system, leading to a calming and relaxing effect.
